Earth Day Research Project Ideas for Upper Elementary Students

Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to go beyond crafts and bulletin boards and help students explore real-world environmental issues in a meaningful way.

If you’re teaching upper elementary, one of the best ways to make Earth Day more academically engaging is through an Earth Day research project. Researching environmental topics allows students to learn about the challenges our planet faces while also practicing critical thinking, writing, and presentation skills.

One of my favorite Earth Day activities each year is having students research a current environmental issue and create a presentation to share their learning with the class. It’s a simple way to blend science, literacy, and speaking skills into one purposeful activity.

Here’s how I structure Earth Day research projects in my classroom, nd why they work so well.

Why Research Projects Are Perfect for Earth Day

Research projects are an excellent way to make Earth Day meaningful while still covering important academic standards.

When students research environmental topics, they practice:

  • Reading informational text
  • Summarizing information in their own words
  • Organizing ideas logically
  • Writing informative responses
  • Speaking and presenting clearly
  • Thinking critically about real-world problems

Even better, students are often naturally interested in environmental topics because they connect to real issues they hear about in the world around them.

Earth Day becomes more than just a celebration, it becomes an opportunity for students to think deeply about how their actions can impact the planet.

Environmental Topics Students Can Research for Earth Day

IfSometimes the hardest part of a research project is helping students decide what to study.

To make topic selection easier, provide students with a list of possible environmental issues to explore.

Some engaging Earth Day research topics include:

  • Climate Change
  • Plastic Pollution
  • Water Pollution
  • Air Pollution
  • Deforestation
  • Endangered Animals
  • Ocean Conservation
  • Recycling and Waste Reduction
  • Renewable Energy
  • Sustainable Agriculture

Allowing students to choose a topic that interests them can increase motivation and help them feel more invested in the project.

Teaching Students How to Research Environmental Issues

Before students begin researching, I always spend time reviewing how to gather information from reliable sources and take notes in their own words.

This step is especially important for upper elementary students who are still developing research skills.

Some kid-friendly websites I recommend for Earth Day research include:

Providing students with pre-approved websites helps keep research focused and ensures they’re using age-appropriate, trustworthy information.

You can also provide a graphic organizer to help students record facts and organize their thinking before beginning their final project.

Turning Research Into an Earth Day Presentation

Once students gather their information, I have them create a presentation to share what they learned.

Google Slides works especially well for this because students can:

  • organize information visually
  • add pictures and graphics
  • practice digital presentation skills
  • create a polished final project they’re proud of

Presenting their work also gives students valuable speaking and communication practice.

To make the process manageable, I provide structured supports like:

  • a research organizer
  • presentation checklist
  • slide templates
  • grading rubric

Having those supports in place helps students stay organized and creates a much smoother experience for everyone. elementary students who are still learning how to research and present independently.

A Done-for-You Earth Day Research Project Option

IIf you want to save prep time, I created a ready-to-use Earth Day Environmental Issues Research Project that includes everything students need to complete this activity independently.

This resource includes:

  • printable research topic pages
  • research organizers
  • Google Slides templates
  • presentation checklist
  • rubric

It’s designed specifically for upper elementary students and makes implementing an Earth Day research project simple and organized.

Pair It With a Hands-On Earth Day STEM Activity

Want to extend learning even further?

After students research environmental issues, I love following up with a hands-on Earth Day STEM challenge so students can shift from learning about problems to brainstorming solutions.

This helps students move from simply understanding environmental issues to thinking like real-world problem-solvers.

Final Thoughts

Earth Day is the perfect time to help students think critically about the world around them and the role they play in protecting it.

By incorporating research projects into your Earth Day plans, you can create a meaningful learning experience that builds academic skills while encouraging environmental awareness.

Students not only practice valuable research and presentation skills, but they also begin to understand how even small actions can make a difference.
