4 Reasons to Try Choice Boards in Your Classroom (+ Free ELA Choice Board!)

Have you ever wished your students were excited to start an assignment?

Or maybe you’re searching for a way to mix things up and give students a little more say in their learning (without adding hours to your planning)?

If that sounds like you, you’re going to love choice boards!

Choice boards have completely changed the way I run my classroom – and honestly, I wish I’d started using them sooner.

If you’re new to choice boards, or just curious about all the hype, let’s dive in! (Don’t forget to grab your FREE ELA Choice Board at the end of this post!)

What is a Choice Board?

Think of a choice board as a menu of learning options.

It’s usually a simple grid, and each box gives students a different activity to choose from.

They can pick what interests them most, how they learn best, or what they feel ready for.

It’s an easy, flexible way to put students in the driver’s seat.

And here’s the magic: when students get to choose, they’re way more motivated to do the work!

4 Reasons to Use Choice Boards in Your Classroom

1. Choice Boards Increase Student Motivation & Engagement

Let’s be real: we’ve all had days when our students seem totally checked out, or rush through work just to get it done.

Choice boards are my secret to flipping the script! When students get to pick their activity, the work suddenly feels more meaningful – and they’re actually excited to do it.

I love seeing my students take ownership and show pride in their work because they had a say in how they completed it.

They become more invested, more creative, and more willing to push themselves.
2. Choice Boards Make Differentiation Easy

If you’re always looking for ways to meet students where they are, you’ll love how choice boards support differentiation. With a well-designed board, students can choose activities that fit their skills and stretch their thinking.

Want to challenge a fast-finisher?

They can pick a more advanced option.

Need to scaffold for a student who needs extra support?

There’s an option for that too.

You can even let students work in pairs or groups to promote collaboration and peer learning.

Choice boards celebrate your students’ strengths and give everyone a way to shine!

3. Choice Boards Embrace All Learning Styles

No two students learn exactly the same way, right?

That’s why I fill my choice boards with a mix of options – creative projects, hands-on activities, writing tasks, and even a little research here and there.

Some kids love drawing, others would rather write a poem or build a model.

With choice boards, everyone can pick something that speaks their language!

You’ll notice your students are more engaged and able to demonstrate their understanding in ways that feel natural to them.

4. Choice Boards Are So Versatile

This is one of my favorite things about choice boards – they work for everything.

I use them for reading, spelling, math, science, and social studies. They’re perfect for centers, independent work, homework, or even early finisher options.

Want to spice up your spelling or vocabulary lessons?

Offer choices like making flashcards, creating a word art poster, or writing a silly story using all their words. (If you want to dive deeper into spelling, check out my Spelling Choice Boards blog post here!)

For reading, I love offering options like summarizing a chapter, creating a comic strip, or writing an alternate ending.

My students actually ask for choice board activities – seriously!

You can even get students involved in making their own choice boards for a special project. The sky’s the limit!
