Introduction to Spelling Choice Boards

If your students struggle with spelling, or if they just don’t enjoy it?

Spelling choice boards are the answer.

A choice board is a grid or list of different activities that students can pick from to practice their spelling words.

What makes these so great is the flexibility they offer.

Students get to choose the activities they actually want to do, which keeps them more engaged and motivated.

Plus, choice boards cater to different learning styles, giving kids the freedom to learn in a way that works best for them.

Whether it’s drawing their words into a fun design, writing creative sentences, or building spelling pyramids, there’s something for everyone.

Choice boards make practice feel like a fun activity, not just another assignment.

Some of My Favorite Spelling Choice Board Activities

When it comes to spelling choice boards, the key is to offer a mix of activities.

Here are some well-loved ideas to try:

1. Rainbow Write
Students write each of their spelling words multiple times using different colors for each letter.

2. Spelling Sentences
Have students use each of their spelling words in a sentence. This encourages them to think about the meaning and proper usage of the words, while reinforcing spelling and grammar skills.

3. Word Art
Let students get creative by turning their spelling words into pieces of art. They can design posters, doodles, or create word shapes.

4. Write a Song
Students write a song or a rap using their spelling words.

6. Spelling Stories
Challenge students to write a short story using all of their spelling words. This activity pushes them to think creatively and contextually about how their words can be used together, making the practice more meaningful.

7. Find the Word Origin
Have students use a dictionary to find the origin of the word. This is a great opportunity to reinforce the learning of root words, prefixes, and suffixes.

Top Tips for Getting Starting With Choice Boards

Using a new strategy can be overwhelming.

But if used correctly, spelling choice board activities can actually cut back on the overwhelm!

They offer enough variety to keep things fun and interesting for students.

But since the procedure stays the same, there’s not as much for you to worry about when it comes to classroom management.

Here are some of my top tips for getting started with spelling choice boards:

  • Rotate Activities
Change up the activities every few weeks to keep things fresh. You can even ask students to come up with activity ideas to include on future spelling choice boards!
  • Provide Examples
Show students examples of completed activities so they know what’s expected. You can even have students choose activities for you to complete on the board, so they can understand what to expect.
  • Spend Time Practicing Together
Before you have students complete these choice boards themselves, spend some time doing them together as a class.
  • Get the Whole Grade Involved
If you have more than one class per grade at your school, you can have different classes share their work online using a tool like Padlet or Google Classroom.
  • Spelling Showcase
Create a Spelling Showcase display to show off your students’ creative spelling practice creations.
